Week 9 Day 5 – Tons of Updates!
DAM this is late. I sincerely apologize but it’s been straight HECTIC.
So on Friday, I received word of my acceptance to the Hacker-in-Residence program! It’s pretty much a Software Engineering Intern position where I get to work on in-house projects, as well as interview prospective students in both the technical and non-technical sense.
We also finished up working on our FSP’s on Friday, which meant that it was crunch time for producing our production README’s as well as fixing some bugs. I actually found a critical bug in mine when I pushed it to Heroku, which sucks big time. What ended up happening was that, while my infinite scrolling feature was working on my local server, it would break when I push to Heroku. I’m pretty sure I mentioned this on Thursday’s post, but I was still having that issue on Friday, which was a bummer. I haven’t figured out the solution yet, but I’m brainstorming a couple different ways I could test it, all the while trying to keep up with the rest of the curriculum.
After finishing up our FSP’s for the day and the week, we were introduced to our frontend JavaScript projects! I’m pretty excited about my idea, since I’ve been inspired by Robby Leonardi’s Interactive Resume for quite awhile now. I really want to build my own, and I’ve really been thinking about doing one in the Harry Potter theme. That’s my first choice. My second choice would probably be an in browser, music-related app. I’ve thought about ideas modeling previous projects. I’ve also thought about doing a resume that’s based off or parallax scrolling and a lot of animations. All of these are pretty awesome ideas that I want to implement on, but I’m nervous about how simplistic they are. The downside to this is that we only have 3 days to finish the project. However, as a Hacker-in-Residence, my JavaScript due date is pushed back to the end of the cohort, and I opt-out of the flex project. I’m hoping that won’t be the case, and that I’ll be able to finish my JavaScript project fairly quickly, albeit it’s design intensive, which is what I want since I’ve been really wanting an opportunity to be creative.
We finished off the night with t-shirts! We’ve basically graduated from the curriculum portion on the course, which is a pretty big deal, and a huge transition occurs when you graduate from the curriculum. That’s pretty much it for today! I got JS project, HiR readings, job search curriculum and resume’s to work on… all for tonight. Wish me luck!
