Week 12 Day 5 – Job Search Begins
Real talk though, on Friday I had the incredible opportunity to visit Ancestry’s office and tour the place, and holy crap, it’s absolutely beautiful. At first, all I wanted was Google, since it’s touted as the epitome of a Software Engineer’s career. With Google under your name, you’re set for life, anywhere and everywhere. It’s also a great place to work. After having talked to a couple engineers from Google, the work-life balance is great, the culture is awesome and the people are great. Their mission is pretty awesome too, after all, if it wasn’t for google, amazing learning resources wouldn’t be as easily accessible and filtered, thus my journey as a Software Engineer may have taken a lot longer to accomplish.
However, after my visit with Ancestry, I was able to do a lot of thinking, in regards with what I really want in a work place, and where I want to be for the next decade. I still want to be at Google, but Ancestry has opened up my mind to the concept that there’s so many other places where the feel is so similar to Google, the only difference is the mission and the product. That said, Ancestry is definitely a company I could get behind. Seriously, as a Software Engineer who graduated with a degree in Biochemistry, Ancestry’s products are right down my alley. And if you recall, I still have a love for the sciences.
Figuring all this out last week has made me really excited for the job search, discovering new opportunities or possibilities is almost as exciting as coding. Granted, it’s not like I have an interview at Ancestry… hopefully yet, but the thought that there are SO many other companies out there who can have that kind of vibe and culture is pretty awesome. Tomorrow, I have another lunch set up, and the following Saturday, I’m hopefully meeting up with another engineer from Google, so I’m excited to dig into their experiences with their roles.
That’s pretty much it for the weekend, I’ve made some progress with my interactive resume, but a lot of time was spent photoshopping. I’m looking forward to making it better after I finish the first draft of the resume, it needs a lot of work.
Alright, good night! And to the March cohort, good luck on A03 tomorrow!
