Week 13 Day 2 – Job Search System
So I’m going to be honest, I got nothing done… haha. Last night, after our weekly Taco night, I came home with a massive food coma. First time it’s actually happened, but I knocked out after watching 15 minutes of the night’s video and… I didn’t wake up until 7am this morning. I’ll get everyone caught up on BST’s tomorrow for sure.
So on to today’s topic, which I promised you yesterday was job search applications and applying. Applying is huge with App Academy, obviously given their tuition model. So each week, there’s a quota that you need to meet, otherwise you accrue a job search strike. The job strike system is a great system in my opinion, and really is just used to hold people, who are otherwise unmotivated, accountable for doing their part in their agreement with App Academy: be in the best possible position given your job app materials, and apply for jobs. So if you’re motivated to get a job, and you put in the work to do it as directed by App Academy, you shouldn’t be getting job search strikes.
You also need to show up for daily roll call until you’ve submitted 150 applications, yep it’s a numbers game. After you’ve submitted 150 applications, you can start showing up one day a week until you’ve received a job. During this time, you can utilize the resources at App Academy, such as peers, whiteboards, coaches, etc. While applying, you also need to track your progress through a/A’s in-house application tracking system, that records each application’s progress, as well as which application you should follow-up with. Really helpful system.
I think that’s pretty much it. My plan is to apply to 10 places a day while balancing everything else. Everything that’s on my plate so far: Hacker duties (which will go from 12 hours a week to 20+), algorithms and data structures projects, job application materials(resume, cover letter, behavioral chart, portfolio page), blogging and my JavaScript project, which is still in progress.
That’s it! Tomorrow is going to be about binary search trees!
